Jean Lofsvold Schwien -- I was born in Camden, New Jersey (ask me about the “New Jersey Joke”), and grew up in Northglenn, Colorado. Rev. Ron Hodges was pastor of Northglenn UMC when my family attended there, and he was my mentor as I entered professional ministry. I attended Colorado College (B.A. in Sociology, 1984) and Iliff School of Theology (Master of Divinity, 1987). I’ve served three churches: Olathe, CO (1987-97), Pueblo, CO, First UMC (1997-2002) and Green Mountain UMC in Lakewood, CO (2002-2012). As you can see—I like extended stays! I enjoy making my home among my church communities, and I look forward to being with you.
I am single, and I’m a proud dog-mom to Abby who is also looking forward to meeting all of you. I have a number of close friends that I count as family, including my former husband Spencer and his children, Jessica and Eric. My older sisters are both ordained pastors also—Peg is United Methodist and will soon become a District Superintendent in Portland, OR; Laurie is Lutheran and currently living and working in Sweden. My brother David is the scientist among us and lives in Eugene, OR. My parents have both passed on. My father used to look at his three pastor/daughters and say, “I don’t know if I did something really right, or if I did something really wrong to inspire you all to go into ministry!”
I am a musician—vocal, flute, and guitar—and I’m excited to be a part of Christ UMC’s wonderful music program! I enjoy being outdoors—walking, hiking, cross-country skiing. I enjoy reading, and yes, I’ve been known to be a couch potato from time to time.
I have a deep love for the church, for church people, and for being in active ministry both within the church building and serving the surrounding community. I’m a “United Methodist Volunteers-in-Mission junkie”—I love going on mission trips and serving in disaster recovery areas and elsewhere. I’ve led trips to South Dakota, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Texas and Mexico. Putting my beliefs into action is, for me, what real faith is all about. I look forward to joining you in service and mission outreach in SLC and beyond.
I am a recent graduate of iIliff School of Theology and served as Student Pastor for University Park UMC in Denver, Colorado during my schooling Ministry is a career-change for me—my background is in business, non-profit management and broadcasting. I would like to welcome you to our website and Christ UMC. I am here to assist you with membership questions, finding a place where you feel you fit in and finding new ways to reach our community and grow our service to others. You can find me sharing in worship, preaching and teaching ministries.
I am married to Kim, and we have three very active, fun little boys at home with us—Zach, Joe and Isaiah—ages 6, 7 and 8. Kim and I adopted all three after learning that the boys would likely have to be separated in order to be adopted. Kim is Chief Operations Officer for Girl Scouts of Utah. Her career spans over 25 years of service to non-profits, usually those benefitting children. Our family also includes adult twin daughters, Amanda Castle and Brandi Lewis. Amanda is married to Jason Castle and both work in Greeley Colorado and have one son, Liam who has just turned 1 and is beginning to walk. Brandi lives in Las Vegas, Nevada; and oversees programming for Head Start of Nevada, she will be married in November to Dave Berg, a hydro-engineer. We also have dogs, Maggie and Sadie, who are great additions to our home.
I have lived across the western US and have shared a great number of life's experiences. I have a deep love for God and for all people. I truly enjoy mission work both in our community as well as around the world. Much of my missionary work has been with Habitat for Humanity serving in emergency housing for hurricane damaged communities in the South, building affordable housing across the Western states and helping build homes in Mexico. I believe that all people deserve to live as God sees us, perfect and beautiful. I look forward to getting to know you and growing toward God's vision for humanity together.
